We are proud to present HONK NYC’s 10 Year Benefit Album!

The title translates from Latin to read: “Fill the City of New York with Sound.” Festival hero and Queens-based artist and maker Nick Normal conceived of and produced the entire project, into which he poured a considerable amount of his volunteer time and brainpower. We are so lucky!

Sona Civitatis Novi Eboraci features tracks from 10 of the many artists who’ve forged the HONK movement around the world, with whom we’ve been honored to collaborate during HONK NYC’s first decade, 2007–2016. These include:

Pink Puffers (Italy) -
Raya Brass Band (USA) -
Minor Mishap Marching Band (USA) -
Perhaps Contraption (UK) -
Chaotic Noise Marching Corps (USA) -
Titubanda (Italy) -
Pakava It (Russia) -
Hungry March Band (NYC) -
Les Vilains Chicots (France) -
Os Siderais (Brazil) -

All proceeds support production of HONK NYC’s annual festival.

This album is dedicated to the memory of Leah Morgan Durrett.

HONK NYC aspires to bring both the joyful noise and irreverent spectacle of the HONK movement to audiences everywhere — in parks, at clubs, in schools, and especially on the streets. We think Sona Civitatis Novi Eboraci aptly conveys this live experience.

Please enjoy this album! As Nick writes, “I listen to it at least once a week. Solid tunes, made by solid people. Amazing.”

Happy listening!

With love,

Eric Drooker’s artwork, “Music vs. Police,” adorns the cover of our album. He’s a legendary graphic novelist, painter, and frequent cover illustrator for The New Yorker. His imaginative scratchboard illustrations of NYC’s Lower East Side illuminate the struggle against gentrification that the neighborhood faced at the end of the 20th century. The transformative power of sound is undeniable in his imagery.

Cartoonist John Holmstrom illustrated the album’s colorful characters. His celebrated art is synonymous with punk: He’s the founding editor of "Punk Magazine," a popular comix maker, and the creator of two album covers for The Ramones. John’s interpretation of the HONK! look is spot-on. He playfully captures how the "inner freak geek" style turns the traditional appearance of the military marching band upside-down.

All tracks copyright their respective bands.
